The Course shall be open to applicants who:

  1. are in possession of passes in five subjects at Grade 5 or better at Secondary Education Certificate level, including English Language, Maltese, Mathematics and any other two subjects, or equivalent qualifications as approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board
  2. shall be not less than 18 years of age within 3 calendar months from the commencement of the Course and
  3. produce certification with regard to their prior or current involvement in Physical Education and/or Sport.

Applicants who apply without the requested qualifications listed in the above paragraphs shall not be required to sit for the assessments of the study-units and shall be awarded a certificate of attendance, provided that they have attended 80% of the lectures.

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an interview in September.

Presently, a number of people working or voluntarily providing a service within sports clubs in coaching, administering, and managing sports institutions are not qualified in the areas they are involved and working in. The course therefore focuses on the pedagogical issues needed for all people involved in coaching and managing athletes and sports clubs. The Foundations in Coaching course provides you with insight on the areas needed for the better running, leading and managing of sports clubs and sports people. Successfully completing the course qualifies you and elevates the standards of the sports community as well as the quality of services provided.

This programme of study is governed by the Pre-Tertiary Certificate in the Foundations of Coaching Course Regulations, 2010 under the auspices of the Institute for Physical Education and Sport.

  • Coaching Philosophy and Objectives
  • Designing a Plan
  • Coaching Styles and Leadership
  • Assessment and Profiling
  • Communication
  • Nutrition, Fitness and its Assessment
  • Basic First Aid
  • Micro-coaching

The Foundations of Coaching is a course which will help you qualify in the areas of coaching within sports clubs. If successful, you will be are awarded a certificate of successful completion endorsed by the University of Malta and SportMalta. This qualification will allow you to work within the coaching sectors within local sports clubs as well as within the coaching programmes offered and organised by SportMalta. Although the Foundations In Coaching is not a pre-requisite for other sport related courses, it is an asset when applying for any sport related courses.
